About us

Honey & the Hive is a beekeeping supply, honey, and gift shop in Weaverville, North Carolina, but our reach is much farther than that! We carry beekeeping supplies, offer classes on beekeeping, sell local honey, and make products from the hive, like propolis tinctureinfused honey, and beeswax candles

More than just a store, we are a hive of like-minded people who love bees and pollinators and want to educate our community about how to help care for this valuable part of our ecosystem.

Our shop provides supplies, advice, and education for beekeepers both new and experienced. We have everything needed for the bee yard, as well as products for the home, jewelry, and art created by local bee lovers.

Our shop distributes local honey from beekeepers within 100 miles of our location, so there’s always a wide range of honey from different pollen sources: Basswood, Sourwood, Wildflower, and sometimes even Kudzu! Honey & the Hive also carries house-made infused honey, which is raw, local wildflower honey infused with herbs and spices. Visit the shop to taste all the flavors of honey we have in stock!

Honey & the Hive works to build a community. We offer classes on beekeeping as well as how to make and use the products of the hive, like candles, infused honey, and mead-making courses taught by local experts. We also partner with other local businesses, like Wehrloom Honey, Curaté, and Sow True Seed - carrying each other’s products and supporting each other’s events.

Our Mural

We are so lucky to have a breathtakingly beautiful mural on the outside of our building painted by Matt Willey, aka The Good of the Hive, in 2016. The global art project has Matt hand-painting 50,000 honey bees in murals all around the world! Check out his site and help support him as he continues his work.

Our History

Our store was originally known as Wild Mountain Bee Supply but changed to Honey & the Hive soon after opening at our current location in January 2017. At that time, the store was managed by Sarah McKinney, a natural bee whisperer, a loving friend, and a source of inspiration and light for many. We lost Sarah in September 2020 and we miss her dearly, but the rest of the Hive continues to keep the store open, the honey flowing, and the bees buzzing in her memory.

After the loss of Sarah, the store remained open with the hard work of Alison Wisely and her fiancé, Knox Petrucci. Alison managed the store and Knox maintained the bees. They both taught our beekeeping classes and worked hard to continue the mission of helping the beekeepers of western North Carolina.

Aly left Honey & the Hive in 2022 to pursue a dream career. Knox took over as the store manager and beekeeper, teaching classes at the store and often garnering awards for his bee’s honey at the Yancey Co Beekeepers Association Black Jar contests.

Hurricane Helene broke our hearts even beyond the damage to the area. Our store manager and longtime employee Knox Petrucci and previous manager Aly Wisely were lost in the storm along with Aly's sweet boys Felix and Lucas. They are loved and will be remembered in our hearts and in a community garden we intend to plant at our store.

In Spring 2025, we will begin renovating and expanding our currently overgrown pollinator garden to create a new memorial garden in the memory of our lost loved ones.

Our Future

As of the end of 2024, Honey & the Hive is still open, growing, and thriving. We are building and maintaining not only our educational hives in the back of our store but also establishing a new apiary in Alexander and supporting other hives in the local area.

Our goals for 2025 are focused on cross-pollination in our communities by hosting more classes, events, garden work days, and other opportunities to meet and work with new people. Do you have a class you want to teach or have an idea to pitch? Write info@honeyandthehivenc.com !
